LMC Floor and Network Plan - Learning Environments

Arrange a tour of the school library media center at your school (or in your district, if not at a school). Draw a detailed floor plan of the school library media center noting locations of materials, offices and conference rooms, circulation desk, storage, computer workstations, equipment rooms, reading and multimedia development areas, entries, and exits, etc. Talk with the school library media specialist about the positive and negative aspects of this plan and make an overlay of the original plan on tracing paper or transparency showing changes you feel would improve the design. Write a brief summary explaining your rationale for these changes.

Identify the components of a network and its infrastructure. Write a brief summary of, the following:

1.     Network (LAN):

          a.  What is the server operating system (Microsoft Windows, Linux, Novell, UNIX, other)?

          b.  Macintosh or Windows based?

          c.  Type of cable connection (Ethernet, fiber, wireless, other)?

          d.  Internet access?

          e.  Are classrooms also connected?

          f.  What hardware is networked? (server, scanner, modem, etc.)

          g.  Which software packages are available on the network?

2.     School library media center information

          a.  Is the school library media center circulation system part of the network?

          b.  Which circulation system is in place?

          c.  Does the circulation system include links to other media centers in the district for

               interlibrary loan access?

          d.  What is the procedure for obtaining materials from another facility?

          e.  Is the media center on a flexible schedule?

          f.  What is the student population at this school?

          g.  What was the annual circulation of this media center last year?

          h.  What is the annual budget and how is it established?

          i.  Other questions you may have?

Conclude your summary with a rationale for each change you propose for this school library media center.

Submit this assignment as requested by your instructor. As you develop your assignment, be sure to review the following rubric for guidance on elements to include and the criteria that will be used to assess your assignment.

Media Center Floor Plan and Network Plan Rubric

CATEGORY 3 2 0
Floor Plan Student drew an overlay of floor plan changes needed to make the school library media center program more effective. Student included an overlay in the project, but did not make any significant changes to the the overlay. Student created an accurate floor plan of an exsisting LMC, but failed to provide an overlay with changes to the technology.
Media Center Access Student described the school library media center's provision for access to materials within the school and from other sources.   Student did not address the school library media center's provision for access to materials within the school and from other sources.
Exsisting Technology Student identified the components of networks in the PreK-12 Environment. Student address some of the network and infrastructure questions, but stills seems confused about the details of networking. Student did not address the networking and infrastructure questions from the assignment.
Changes Rationale Student provided rationale to justify the recommended changes in the school library media center. Student provided a weak or inaccurate argument for the recommened changes in the LMC. Student provided no rationale to justify the recommended changes in the school LMC.
Requirements All requirements are met and exceeded. All requirements are met. More than one requirement was not completely met.
